Back to School: College Tips & Essentials

It's that time of year- A lot of you are getting ready to make (or already have made) the move back to school to either start your first year of college, or begin another year! As you most likely realized while you were packing- college requires A LOT of stuff. Looking back, I realize now that a lot of the things you need are ones that you may not have thought about until you actually needed them. So, as someone who has been through the whole process (and now feels old mentioning it like that), I thought I'd share some essentials and tips to (hopefully) make your college life and packing a little bit easier:

Back to School: College Essentials

1. Invest in a good pair of boots:
Tailgating in the South means boots. Every Saturday. All day long. So, a comfortable, high-quality pair are a necessity.
(Love these Old Gringo snip toe boots)

2. (If you're already a coffee drinker) Bring your own coffee maker:
Even if you're not already a coffee drinker, you may find yourself drinking it often to stay awake. College is where coffee drinkers are born. Late nights and early mornings of studying may drive you to caffeine and having it on hand and at your disposal is easy and cost effective.

3. Carry a portable phone charger:
College days are long and busy. Some days you may have to stay on campus for an extended period of time to study or work and you'll be glad you have a portable charger to keep your phone alive!
(Love this Johnathon Adler Portable Charger for iPhone5)

4. Don't forget to bring a go-to cross-body:
You may not carry it around on campus daily but for football games, tailgating and going out in general, the LAST thing you want to do is lug around a big purse.
(I love the Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC)

5. Always carry a pair of sunnies:
Get a good pair of sunglasses and keep them in your bag. You'll most likely do a lot of walking from class to class and sunglasses will come in handy.
(My go-to still to this day are the black and gold Ray Ban Aviators)

6. Wear a watch everyday.

7. Give in to the Norts:
Oh, the trusty Nike shorts. Judge if you must but there's a reason why everybody wears them- they're comfortable and so easy to throw on with a tee and run out the door.

7. Keep an umbrella in your book bag, always:
You'll thank me later. You never know when you'll come out of a class into a storm and need to get all the way across campus without getting soaked and it never fails that the one time you leave it at home is the day it'll pour. Hint- get one small enough to fit in your bag.

8. Invest in a pair of noise canceling headphones:
Worth the money. If you study in a library, dorm room, or anywhere on campus you're going to have to deal with distractions. It's much easier with noise canceling headphones!
(Mine are Bose)

9. Bring a power strip:
I recommend bringing at least one of these to school with you to have in your room. Between plugging in your laptop, tablet, phone, lamp, tv, etc- you're always going to be running out of outlets.

10. Get a water filter that attaches to your faucet:
Whether you're living in a dorm or have your own place, having drinkable water from the faucet makes things so much easier. Not only will it save you money on bottled water but it will also save you from carrying those huge cases of water up the stairs. Win win!

11. Wears baseball caps:
This goes back to walking outside a lot. Hats were my savior in college. They keep the sun off your face and also make doing your hair so much easier (#sidebraid).
(Love these monogrammed baseball caps from Marley Lilly)

12. Find a good book bag/backpack:
I had one of each. If you go with a book bag, get one with a long handle (easier to carry) and make sure it's big enough to keep things like notebooks and textbooks in while also having room for things like an umbrella, sunglasses, your phone, keys and wallet.

13. Always carry an insulated water bottle.
(I still carry this A&M Tervis with me everyday)

14. Wear tennis shoes:
Have I mentioned how much walking you're going to be doing yet? ;) Find a good pair of tennies and wear them. You're going to want a pair of comfortable shoes that you can put some miles on.
(Nike Frees are my favorite everyday sneaker, but I also love these)

15. Use a planner:
Even if you don't think you need one, school (and life in general) is SO much easier to get through when you're organized and know when things are happening.
(I love my Lilly agenda and this Kate Spade planner also!)

I hope these tips help you out just a little bit. Remember, you may be dreading going back to school for yet another year but know that some of us (raises hand) would gladly trade places with you :) Enjoy it while you can!

Summer Favorites: Elastic Shorts

I love nothing more than being both comfortable AND cute at the same time, which may be why one of my favorite things to wear this Summer has been elastic shorts. Actually, it not 'may be' why, it is why. Whether they're plain, patterned, chambray, cotton or chiffon - I can't seem to get enough of them, so today I'm sharing some of my very favorites [click on the image to be taken to the website]:

Dog Days of Summer

Top: Gap (old) similar | Jean Shorts: J. Crew Factory | Belt: J. Crew (old) similar | Sandals: Tory Burch | Love Always Sideways Initial Necklace *Use code SOUTHERNSHELL for %15 off* | Kendra Scott Bangle (ebay and similar , also love this one

It's been a busy Summer so far and this past weekend was no exception. For long days of errand running, I want to be comfortable but also semi-presentable, so extremely simple outfits like the above are perfect. My lack of makeup and tossed-up hair for this post are definitely a true representation of my outlook regarding 'getting ready' for long days of errands- Simple (outfit choice), quick (hair) and just enough to get by without scaring people (makeup).

I've had these Factory jean shorts for a few years now and I think they will always be a favorite of mine. Unlike most denim shorts, they have a little bit of stretch in them so they are extremely comfortable. To me, a go-to pair of jean shorts will always be a Summer essential and this pair definitely fits the bill. It also helps that jorts go with just about everything, so it was easy to throw on this structured shell from Gap and a bronze belt for the finishing touch.

Thanks for reading :)

Nordstrom Anniversay Sale Picks

Nordstrom Sale Picks

The Nordstrom Anniversary sale is finally here! Although the sale has already been going on for card members, the sale is now officially open to the public and prices will return to normal on August 4th. It's Nordstrom's best sale of the year which means these items are at amazingly low prices and going fast, so don't wait!

Above are some of my favorite picks from this year's sale. Those Sam Edelman lace up heels would be PERFECT for work in the Fall and Winter and the Kendra Scott Danielle earrings pictured are marked down to $39... be still my heart.

What did y'all pick up from the anniversary sale?!

Striped Shorts

Tank Top: J. Crew | Shorts: Asos (old), Similar here and here |  Sandals: F21 (sold out), almost identical verison here | Gigi New York 'Uber' Clutch (Sold out in Indigo) other colors here | Marc Jacobs Bracelet | Bow Necklace (Ebay, Old) Similar at Love Always Couture (here) | Love Always Couture Initial Necklace - don't forget to use code SOUTHERNSHELL for 15% off! | Kendra Scott 'Danielle' EarringsRay Ban Aviators

These high-waisted ASOS shorts may be from last Summer but they're still a major staple for me this year- they're great with basic tanks, a sleeveless chambray and they even hit high enough on the waist to wear crop tops and still be remotely conservative.

Now let's talk about that pretty blue bag for a second. I have been looking at ordering a clutch from Gigi New York for MONTHS and finally pulled the trigger during their 4th of July sale. Now that I finally have it? I love it just as much as I thought I would and I'm extremely happy with my color and size choice. I've always loved the aqua but decided in the end that the darker blue would be a color I'd use year-round. I also went with the 'Uber' as opposed to the 'All In One' because I love the look of a larger clutch and let's be honest, I've got a lot of stuff to carry around ;) Ps- If you are looking into buying a Gigi NY clutch, now is the time! What they have left of the clutches are on sale and going fast!

Is it seriously possible that we are more than half-way through Summer? I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that we are more than half-way through this year!

Until next time,

One Dress, Two Ways: Outfit Collab

When I found out that my sweet friend, Brianna (of Golfer Prep), finally launched her blog, I knew we had to work together. She is seriously adorable and our styles are extremely similar. With that being said, it's no surprise that we both have a lot of the same items, including the ever-so-popular J. Crew Factory Scalloped Shift Dress.

So, this week we decided to team up to show y'all how we both like to style one of our favorite dresses!

Are y'all tired of seeing this sideways initial and Kendra Scott necklace yet? I seriously can't stop pairing the two together- please help me. I've been in a real Summer funk lately and I have been DREAMMMING of a nice, tropical getaway. In the meantime, I thought I'd use this outfit as an occasion to dress like I was on vacation, and it helped a little bit :)

Brianna's take on the scalloped Dress:

I love how she layered her field jacket over this dress and that color combination? Always perfect! Be sure to go check out her post (here) to see more details on how she put her spin on this frock and definitely follow her on Instagram (here) to keep up with her amazing style!

Hope y'all have an amazing week!
